Something In The Air
Summary: Thomas has an accident when a crate of fish lands on his boiler when he was picking up Henry’s freight cars. As he speeds along the coastal line to the Docks, they discover that the line has been damaged by high tides, which can take Thomas’ weight but not big engines like Henry. When night falls, Thomas tries to explain to Henry about the danger, but Henry is too busy teasing him of his fishy smell! However, the Yard Manager fails to warn Henry also, when told of the news, and Henry slides off the tracks, where he is buffer deep in seawater! As soon as the tides were high enough, floating cranes lift Henry out of the water, where the big green engine is humiliated when he finishes his journey to the Docks in a barge full of smelly fish! After a wash down, Henry says sorry for teasing Thomas

Script

Narrator: One day, Thomas was at the key side of a small village. Fish were being loaded into his cars. The work took a long time. The fishermen were using old equipment and Thomas was worried.

Thomas: I’m going to be late for Henry at the Docks he won’t like this. Please hurry up!

Narrator: Thomas was rudely interrupted.

(Crate of fish crashes into Thomas)

Narrator: His driver and fireman laughed.

Thomas: Pheww!

Narrator: Sniffed Thomas.

Thomas: What a pung!

Narrator: He was glad he was speeding along the coastal run. Then they saw a man waving a red flag.

Thomas: What’s the matter now?

The man: High tides are damaging the track. I have marked the spot.

Thomas’ driver: We’ll go and inspect.

Narrator: Said Thomas’ driver.

(Thomas goes to the tides)

Thomas’ driver: It would be dangerous for heavy engines like Henry.

Narrator: Agreed the driver.

Thomas’ driver: But for Thomas its safe enough.

Narrator: The guard put a lamp by the damaged the track to warn

The guard: When we get into the Docks I’ll tell them to close the line.

(Thomas leaves the area)

Narrator: Henry was waiting for Thomas’ cars.

(Thomas arrives at Brendam Docks)

Henry: Puh! You’re late! That smell is making me ill!

Thomas: It’s the fish!

Narrator: Replied Thomas.

Thomas: And there is danger on the rails. That is why were late.

Henry: Huh! You’re the only the danger on the rails, Thomas! And stop wasting time and get your cars each on my train!

Narrator: Thomas’ driver and fireman were in the Yard Man’s office when they heard Henry’s whistle. He was steaming out of the station along the heavy train, called The Flying Kipper.

Thomas’ driver: What rude is Henry taking tonight?

Yard Man: The coastal line. It’s the quickest.

Thomas’ driver: But I told you!

Narrator: Cried the driver.

Thomas’ driver: That’s dangerous for big engines like Henry!

Narrator: The Yard Master quickly phoned the signalman. Henry rolled passed by the signal box.

Henry: I’ll soon make up for last time.

Narrator: The signalman couldn’t hear the warning! By the time he did, Henry was far away in a cloud of steam. But when Henry reached the coastal track, his hopes were a fast run were dashed. Fog floated everywhere.

Henry: I can’t see!

Narrator: Cried Henry. Nor could his driver. And when he could it was too late!!

(Henry applied the brakes)

(Henry goes into the water)

(Water goes out Henry’s mouth)

Narrator: As soon as the tide was high enough, Henry was craned out of the water.

Sir Topham Hatt: Engines don’t swim, Henry. You’re meant to deliver fish not swim with them. You should know that by now!

Henry: Yes sir. I’m sorry sir.

Narrator: When Henry arrived at the Docks, Cranky the crane looked down at him.

Cranky: My my Henry I expect you’ll have some fishy tales to tell. But take my advice you’ll have a long whole’s down first.

Narrator: But there was worst to come.

The children: Look they’ve caught all this fish and a green whale. It’s not a whale. It’s a monster.

Narrator: Henry was most upset. Thomas smell felt sorry for Henry.

Thomas: Come on. You’re driver says it’s time for a nice wash down. Then you’ll feel much better.

(Thomas pushes Henry too the wash down)

Narrator: And Henry did.

Henry: I’m sorry I was rude to you, Thomas.

Thomas: That’s alright. But can you smell something?

Henry: W-w-hat?!

Thomas: Fresh air. 

Henry: Oh yes.


Narrator: Replied Henry happily……
